China has made tremendous achievements in Expressway construction. By the end of 2017, the expressway mileage was 136,500 kilometers, ranking the first in the world. There are 4.773 million kilometers of highways, 4.338 million kilometers of grade 4 roads and above, and 62.22 million kilometers of grade 2 roads and above. Among them, 4646 super-large bridges, 8.2672 million meters, 91,777 bridges, 24.2437 million meters, 902 super-long tunnels, 4.013 million meters, 3,841 long tunnels, 6.599 million meters. However, behind the great achievements, there are also some problems. According to international standards, there are problems in the design, construction and maintenance of expressways in China, mostly due to historical reasons.
According to relevant statistics, the accident rate, mortality rate and injury rate of highway are 7.95, 4.20 and 4.37 times of that of general highway respectively, 16, 8.4 and 9.2 times of the average level of Western countries. There are 136,500 kilometershigh-speed mileage and 300 million motor vehicles in China, which will increase to 150,000 kilometers and 500 million vehicles by 2020. With the rapid growth of car ownership and highway mileage year by year, the situation of highway traffic safety will become more and more serious.
